In the afternoon of Monday, September 2, 55 year-old Brain Miller of Middlefield, Massachusetts was killed after crashing his motorcycle on Route 9 near the Westfield River.
Miller, who had recently been elected to a three-year term on the Gateway Regional School Committee, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle along Route 9. Witnesses who rode behind Miller for approximately 20 miles reported that he was driving normally, without making any reckless or dangerous maneuvers. Miller apparently lost control of his motorcycle upon reaching a sharp curve on Route 9 and crashed into a guardrail. Following the impact, Miller flew over the railing and slid down a steep embankment to the shore of the Westfield River.
With the help of volunteers, emergency responders managed to get Miller up the embankment to the ambulance. Miller was rushed to the emergency room at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital.
Local police report that a car was seen near the motorcycle at the time of the motorcycle accident, although it is unclear whether the car contributed to the biker crash. The Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction unit has been called in to investigate the accident and to determine its causes.
The sharp curve on Route 9 where Miller died is the site of several previous fatal accidents blamed on the dangerousness of the road at that point.
